As Endo pulled up in front of Sekine’s apartment building, she said, “Thank you for the ride home.”

“It’s all right,” Endo said. “Now you owe me.”

She expected him to say something like that. She did not want to hear the conditions.

“I don’t—”

“Come to me if you want inside information,” he said, producing his meishi from his wallet and writing a telephone number on the back.

“It’s you who should call me,” she said, pulling her own card from its holder. Gently taking his pen from his hand, she wrote a number.

“All right,” he said, quickly glancing at the card. “Remember. Leave the Inspector alone. Call me.”

Sekine said nothing as she got out of the car, and only briefly looked back to see Endo wave as he drove off.

“Maybe,” she said. “Maybe not.”
